fun with MY tasty bone biscuits

Image

Hi. It’s me, Vanilla Bean. Will someone tell my overseer that a walk once a week is a sign of dog abuse… I tried to reason with her through barks, pleading looks, and mischief but she seemed oblivious… grrrr… (she’s in that state when she’s playing with several pair of scissors again…)
Does she really think that branded dog treats (such as the Pedigree Tasty Bone) would appease my missed strolls?…*sigh*… Cassie, Keanna and mum-Princess disagreed with me… just look at their faces…
I tried not to look but my nose just couldn’t block the meaty smell…

What did they put on those biscuits… must be strong stuff because our forelegs automatically lifted…

cruunchyyyy….yummmy…

The next day, I avoided the bone-shaped treats temptation at the garden in protest for my missed walks… I guess this adage was true:

have fun and the pack shares the fun with you; mope and you’re on your own while they have a great time with your biscuits…

" we're pretty sure VB's not into the biscuits SO DROP IT!"

an ice cream spoon ain’t enough

Image

Hi. It’s me, Vanilla Bean.

Spring says hi in some parts of the world; here in my town, its hot… which means tropical Summer is fast approaching…

To cool down, my humans consume lots of refreshments… iced tea, chilled buko juice, ice candies, halu-halo and yes… ice cream. Usually, they buy something with laced chocolate. Sometimes, they go for fruity flavor… such as the ones below…

Selecta Classic Strawberry Ice Cream vs. Selecta Supreme Pistachio & Cashew Ice Cream

She said I could only have a spoon of the yummy stuff. Which one to taste? Selecta‘s super thick strawberry ice cream laced with real strawberry swirl or pistachio ice cream with roasted pistachio and cashew nuts… it’s such a difficult decision for a puppy to make… so I went for the obvious — the green one…

this green ice smells more cashew than pistachio

here I go...ooow... 2 nut-flavors in one spoon...

…but a spoon of yumminess is really not enough… I’ve got to use my cute charms to get another one…

it's really a hot day, so have a heart and gimme some...pleaaasssse

my favorite sweet flavor

... yummmmy...

sweet Piaya

Hi. It’s me Vanilla Bean.

How’s your Valentines Day? Did you have fun? I hope you got showered with love in the form of kisses, hugs, treats, praises, gifts, etc. from your humans…As for me, my humans did a great job in expressing their love.

My overseer made a handmade denim dog vest for me (which I wore during my afternoon walk last Tuesday); how a red angry bird got stuck to it… I really dunno… Next, she gave me a spoonful of Selecta Quezo Real ice cream which I enjoyed licking and she shared some of her Bongbong’s Piaya, too. (I put on my best give-me-some look when Twinkle opened the gift-stuffs she received from from Uncle JH).

When my humans spoke the word Piaya (pronounced as pee-ya-ya), I thought it’s a funny name for a treat… the people who made it in the City of Smiles (Bacolod City) probably lived in jocularity… Anyway, I followed each of them who had this food in his person, pawed them when they tried to ignore me, and flicked my tongue several times just to get my message across that I wanted to sample this disc-like bread…
This a simple native sweet treat was made with flour, brown sugar, purple yam, sesame seeds, and of course, love… the starchy bread crumbled into flakes easily as it hit my mouth… and the purple filling at the center tasted so good. With its texture – crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and its yummy smell especially when served hot… my verdict was a four paws up for the Piaya…

Tsitsaron treat

Image

Hi. It’s me Vanilla Bean.

After a sound ear bashing yesterday with a couple of nips from mum-Princess, I decided to put on my best behavior today. (And who wouldn’t when ya whiffed the smell of that oh-so-yummy dish!) They called it Tsitsaron, a popular Filipino dish with many variations – pork, beef, or chicken skin as key ingredient. It’s an appetizer usually dipped in vinegar or vinaigrette… Well, my humans had it for an afternoon snack… so I thought it’s like chips but better…

non-greasy and perfectly seasoned crackling pork (meat boiled and deep-fried for gastronomic indulgence)

I’ve pawed Twinkle several times and I even put on my please-give-me-some look… no response. grrr… When that didn’t work, I barked at her. heheh… My loud barking voice must have jolted some common sense into her head… I guessed she remembered that she needed to refrain from high-calorie food. (oh yeah, she’s on diet alright… and I reminded her of that,  am I a good doggie or what?) When she gave me a pat on my head, that signaled my victory…  ;-)  I thought I could taste it at last and listen to its crackling sound… arooo… How about ya, what did ya have for a tasty treat today?

Monday Mischief: messy eaters

Image

Hi. It’s me, Vanilla Bean.

Dark clouds and occasional rain showers made our internet slow as a turtle last Saturday… tropical depression or something cancelled my walks, too. But the real reason I was unable to post something was… big momma banned me inside the house because I soiled the furniture on purpose.  :-( (my overseer won’t allow the photos posted… to eyyyewwww.)

Twinkle remarked that I was “jelly belly” (that’s her description for someone experiencing a a mild jealousy thing)… me jealous?!… hmpf… Well what to do, their attention were on those furballs… I got away this morning at the slightest opening of the gate (without my collar!) but Kenji caught up with me before I got to the end of the block…aggh

"bad doggy," Kenji told me as he carried me back home...

Meanwhile, Twinkle gave porridge to the squeeker-pups for breakfast; they looked funny with their messy fur and faces…

what ‘dya mean I look the same last year?… ohh yeah…maybe….

my proud dad-Butchok looks on while mum-Princess cleans up the litter...

Still photos say much… but I thought their first milky-porridgeexperience is better in video…

It’s me, Vanilla Bean.

I must say that I had a yummylicious first new year… Here’s how it went: …during new year’s eve, I’ve observed that the kitchen was the busiest area in the house and it smelled good, too… so I decided to hang out under the table where they prepare the ingredients…hoping that morsels and meat stuff would fall on the floor. Unfortunately, Keanna spotted me and barked me off her area…sigh

our kitchen floor manager on standby

…especially when EJ baked a chocolate cake… and when that brown food was in oven, the smell of it was sooo inviting… I think it translated like taste me…

Also, summoned by that delectable scent were Brett and Krung-krung (Auntie Alet’s dogs); they came near our kitchen window to woof their greetings…and to ask for holiday treats, of course. I dunno what Twinkle gave them…all I know was that they kept coming back to ask for more…

our neighbor's pack

Alas, this double chocolate cake was for canine eyes and noses only…

brown food i'm allowed to google and sniff ONLY

Twinkle said “No” several times at me when I gave her my please-give-me-some-of-that-food look…not a good sign. However, she gave me a slice of sponge cake (made by big momma) which I really enjoyed so much…

can't get enough of big momma's sponge cake

So, how about you…what sweet-treat did you ate on the first day of the year?

Wordless Wednesday: Stick-O treats

Vanilla Bean was in her active mode the day she turned 6 months old. I was mildly surprised because she’s normally hyper playing with her toys… but at the back of my mind, I strongly suspected that the reason behind her “good behavior” was the strawberry-flavored wafers at my working table… I wonder if she would still be adventurous in treat-taste  when she’s fully groan grown…

In search of a tasty meat pie

Image

Watching the Masterchef series on TV led to my pastry craving. I tried to suppress it but I knew I was in trouble when I began flipping the pages of the old cookbook again. Then before I knew it, I found myself pulling two nine-inch wide pineapple pies out of the oven. It just feels so good to sink my teeth into a homemade pastry dish once in a while (four times a month, that is).

My beef-loving puppy Vanilla Bean inspired me to put on meat fillings instead of fruit into my latest pie. I searched some meat-based pastry recipes and decided to make Alicia Reynold’s Meat Loaf Pie  (at allrecipes.com). This pastry dish has layers of whole corn kernel, ground beef, mashed potato, and cheddar cheese.

I did not totally follow this recipe as I made some tweaking on it. Also, I made the pie crust and mashed potato from scratch. To speed things up, I enlisted EJ’s help with the creamy mashed potatoes. My 6th grader nephew (EJ) also assembled the layers of filling into the baked pie crust.

After more than an hour, we tasted our first ever meat pie…Vanilla Bean gave her “appawval” of this dish by consuming a wedge in less than 30 seconds…We also got rave reviews from the humans.

NOTE: Meat loaf pie is best served when hot.

My version of the Meat Loaf Pie (filling: sweet corn, cooked ground beef, mashed potato, grated processed cheese)
